In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org – Bruce Arnold from NYU talks about his approach to teaching students and the importance of transcription. He explains the first time he has a lesson with a student he plays with them and tests their ears. He works on ear training with his students and picks a topic such as scales or approach notes to work on so that eventually the student is introduced to many concepts. He believes that this will enable his students to develop their own style of playing. He advises that transcribing music can be very helpful in your development as a musician.
